Well I’m back by popular demand. No! Honest someone has been asking where my latest blog is, dear reader. So yeah I’m going with popular.
So what’s been keeping me away from blogging? Life really. It’s been busy. Last time here I mentioned I’d taken up running and had started a new running plan. Well it’s been going well. Tough days and some not so tough (nah they’ve all been tough). While not running there’s been walking football interfering with PC time and also the strengthening exercises that are part of the plan.
So that’s the excuses out of the way.
Now if you were expecting something deep and maybe even philosophical from the blog title I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you. This is about an assumption I made that has pained me a little but today the realisation that I was wrong brought me great joy.
These last 2 and half weeks I’ve been on the treadmill training because, and I’ll be straight here, I really don’t want to be out there running for 30 seconds then walking for 2 minutes for 20 minutes or so with people around. Yes I know they’re probably not watching me but there are a lot of runners around here and, at the moment, I’m the wrong shape and speed. My hang up no-one else’s.
So I’ve been on the treadmill and that can be demoralising. Bear in mind that in October I’ll be attempting to run for 5K (shameless plug [https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/charles-loch-ness]) spending 25 minutes running and walking and just managing 1 click seems like I have a long way to go. Even running at 4kmph, which is as fast as I can manage and then only for a minute, is going to give me a time over an hour! I walked faster than this when I was doing my Kiltwalks. 26 miles in under 8 hours is 5.2kmph!! I’m going to have to put in some extra effort.
So today at lunchtime I decided to go for a walk. It’s a rest day but a walk, not too brisk, will at least re-invigorate my legs after last night’s exertions. So set Map My Run of and away we (I) go. It’s a bit hot but I’m not running or even walking quickly and soon I’m back at work. Check Map My Run. 1.92km in 21.46 minutes.
WHAT?????
The penny drops. The treadmill is calibrated in miles. MILES!!!!! MILES!!!!
I assumed it was km but I was wrong. I am an idiot. A happy idiot today but an idiot none the less.
I’m going to feel a lot better doing tomorrow’s workout I can tell you!
