The Finishing Line

Whoosh! We’re done.

These latter legs have just flown in and what with life returning to a semblance of normality it’s been hard to blog our progress.

So we left Maggies Forth Valley for Maggies Lanarkshire on Friday and reached it in two days

Maggie’s Lanarkshire at Monklands Hospital opened in 2014. It was designed by Reiach and Hall Architects and is significantly larger than the interim centre at Wishaw General Hospital, enabling us to offer many more people living with cancer Maggie’s evidence-based programme of support from our expert team of staff.

The architect’s approach imagines a low-lying building that negotiates the spaces between existing trees that define the northern boundary belt to the main hospital site. The essence of the design is the creation of a matrix of courtyards that result in a porous building, an extension of the landscape that offers moments of visibility and outlook with places of privacy and inlook.

Two days later we walked/jogged into Maggies Glasgow completing out 463.6km (288 mile) trek.

Maggie’s Glasgow is a striking, single-storey building built in 2011. It is formed as a ring shape around a landscaped internal courtyard, and is nestled among the woodland in the grounds of Gartnavel General Hospital.

Rem Koolhaas, the Pritzker-winning architect of OMA, designed the interlocking rooms to flow into one another while still remaining separate, “like a series of scenes of domesticity in which the kitchen, dining room and library appear in succession.” This makes the centre feel homely, and in direct contrast to the institutional atmosphere of a hospital.

Lily Jencks, daughter of Maggie’s co-founders, Maggie Keswick Jencks and Charles Jencks, designed the internal courtyard plantings and the wooded glades areas surrounding the centre.

And so it’s over? Well no, not really. We’ve put in the steps and completed the miles on the road but we’re still short of our sponsorship target. As I write this we’re sitting at 72% of our monetary target. So with a little help from you kind people reading this we should make our total. Please use the link below to donate and it doesn’t matter which of us you donate to the money is all going to the same place.
