C25K

What is this torture? I was told I would enjoy it. To be honest I kind of did enjoy it but….

I failed!

Or as my friend Ed would say “I rehearsed for success”. That does sound better doesn’t it?

Today wasn’t supposed to be my start day, that would have been this coming Tuesday as I was intending to have a round of golf this morning. That was thrown in the air when my golf partner called off as he was working last night and then we agreed to have my grandson overnight. So that was the morning sorted.

So with the day’s excercise now canceled (Yeah that’s right with a one year old bundle of energy to look after!!) I decided I’d start this afternoon.

Now for those of you who don’t know C25K it’s a way of getting unfit people off of their couch and running 5 kilometers within 9 weeks. I looked it up a few weeks ago and week 1 looked OK

“For your 3 runs in week 1, you will begin with a brisk 5-minute walk, then alternate 1 minute of running and 1-and-a-half minutes of walking, for a total of 20 minutes.”

Well that’s OK. I can run for a minute then walk and so on and on. That was until I went to our walking football session last Monday. Part of my own warm up, apart from stretching, is a quick little jog across the pitch with some backwards running included, I’m adventurous you know. I did this on Monday. 10 seconds it lasted! “I’m going to be in trouble when I start the C25K!!”

And so it proved today. The brisk 5 minute walk no worries. “Now run for a minute” was the instruction. “This is run one of eight.”

WHAT????

8 runs? I hadn’t costed this out properly when I read the instructions! Well I lasted about 45 seconds. “Now walk” came the voice through the phone. “I’m ahead of you, Hen.”

“Now run for a minute. This is run two of eight.” Another 45 seconds. I’m getting this. Kind of. Well run three lasted about 15 seconds. My running legs had run off!

Sad to say I walked the rest apart from run seven which got 30 seconds.

So things can only get better and I think they will. I’ve started and, now that I’ve stopped drinking, I’ll finish this.

Roll on Tuesday evening. (Did I just say that?)

  1. I struggled when i started as well, It does get easier, you’ve just go to go at your own pace. If week one takes two weeks who cares? Every step forward is a step in the right direction. Give me a shout if you want a running partner.
